As a community-focused mall, The Mall at WTCAD takes environmental conservation extremely seriously. This month, The Mall offered its visitors the opportunity to exchange their harmful plastic bags for eco-friendly shopping bags. By collecting over 76,500 plastic bags it achieved its goal of raising awareness of the disastrous impact of plastic pollution.

Since the 1950s, around 8.3 billion tons of plastic have been produced worldwide yet only 9% of it has been recycled. Frighteningly, over the past 50 years, world plastic production has doubled, meaning that currently every minute about 2 million plastic bags are used worldwide. This has disastrous results as plastic is killing more than 1.1 million seabirds and animals every year.

This month, the ‘Rethink Plastic’ campaign, led by The Mall at WTCAD, Emirates Nature WWF and the EAD, educated visitors about how the mindless disposal of plastic bags can have very harmful consequences on the environment and showed families how they can change their habits to combat this epidemic problem of unnecessary waste.  By stopping using plastic bags and with re-usable Jute bags still available to buy at The Mall, we encourage you to join this powerful initiative and be part of the green movement! Student volunteered and contributed in spreading the awareness and collecting plastic bags, while encouraging shoppers to make a pledge and make a commitment to how they will continue to re-think plastic.
