In a significant step toward fostering environmental sustainability, Sharjah Islamic Bank (SIB) has announced a strategic partnership with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah. This initiative aligns with the SIB’s commitment to sustainable development goals and reinforces its leadership role in preserving the environment and natural resources.

“Tree Planting” Initiative: One Tree for Every Bank Card Issued

As part of this partnership, the two entities have launched the “Tree Planting” initiative, supporting national efforts to enhance environmental sustainability and protect plant diversity. The initiative commenced with the planting of 50 native trees at Al Montather Reserve on Mleiha Road, attended by officials from SIB and EPAA, as well as volunteers and environmental enthusiasts.

With a goal of planting 5,000 trees by the end of the year, this initiative is designed as a long-term commitment to sustainable environmental practices. It introduces an innovative incentive mechanism that promotes community participation—one tree will be planted for every new bank card issued. This approach encourages individuals and institutions to actively contribute to afforestation projects while fostering a sense of environmental responsibility to ensure the sustainability of these efforts.

Embedding Sustainability in Corporate Culture

HE Mohamed Abdalla, CEO of Sharjah Islamic Bank, emphasized that this partnership with EPAA is a pivotal step toward increasing environmental awareness and embedding sustainability into corporate culture.

“We at Sharjah Islamic Bank are proud to establish this significant partnership with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, a step that strengthens environmental sustainability principles and enhances public awareness of the importance of conserving natural resources. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond banking—it includes actively supporting impactful environmental initiatives and developing innovative financial solutions that strike a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability, in line with the UAE’s vision for sustainable development,” he stated.

He further highlighted the SIB’s dedication to creating a positive and lasting impact on the community, noting that customers play a key role in this initiative. Every banking transaction made through SIB cards directly contributes to national efforts to protect the environment, aligning with the UAE’s national strategy for planting Al Ghaf trees—a reflection of the country’s deep-rooted environmental values.

Effective Institutional Partnerships for Shared Environmental Goals

HE Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah, emphasized that the initiative embodies the spirit of effective partnerships between institutions to achieve shared environmental goals and strengthen efforts to instill environmental awareness in society.

“We are delighted with this collaboration with Sharjah Islamic Bank, which underscores our institutions’ commitment to environmental social responsibility. This initiative serves as a model for adopting sustainable practices that contribute to realizing the UAE’s ambitious environmental vision,” she said.

She reaffirmed the EPAA’s continued efforts to expand green spaces and protected areas while fostering strategic partnerships with various entities. She also highlighted that the support of financial institutions and the private sector for environmental projects is a crucial factor in driving sustainable development.

Joint Environmental Initiatives to Enhance Sustainability

Under this strategic partnership, both parties will roll out a series of ongoing and innovative environmental initiatives aimed at reducing carbon footprints, preserving biodiversity, and combating climate change.
