As part of its efforts to protect and enhance Abu Dhabi’s marine ecosystems, on Saturday 30thOctober, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) organised a successful beach clean-up, along Al Bahia Beach, Abu Dhabi.
To help mitigate the problems caused by ocean debris and the danger inflicted on marine life, more than 30 volunteers took part in the beach clean-up, including the organisers of the upcoming FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), which is set to take place in December at the sustainably designed Etihad Arena, and 13 children.
Also in attendance wasthe official mascot for the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), the Hawksbill Turtle, which is one of two endangered species of turtle that the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi works hard to rehabilitate back into their natural habitat.
In total, the volunteers collected over 320kg of plastic, fishing gear and nets, across a one square-kilometre area.
As part of its commitment towards protecting Abu Dhabi’s marine ecosystems, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and the organisers the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), will be holding further beach clean-ups during November, with confirmed dates to be announced in due course.
