New research from Moneybarn has revealed that United Arab Emirateswas found to be the country producing the 8th most Co2 emissions in the world from an average commute, producing 3,991g of Co2! By analysing data from Numbeo’s Traffic Index on the average commute time, and vehicle global emissions, Moneybarn has compiled a report revealing and ranking each country according to the amount of Co2 emissions created from a single average journey. Read the full breakdown of the report here: https://www.moneybarn.com/co2-commutes/ The biggest culprits in Co2 emissions:
Rank | Country | Average commute time (mins) | Estimated CO2 emissions per journey (g) |
1 | South Africa | 39.39 | 4,859 |
2 | Lebanon | 38.53 | 4,621 |
3 | Costa Rica | 60.19 | 4,514 |

9 | Nigeria | 61.97 | 3,963 |
10 | Malaysia | 37.21 | 3,886 |
The countries with the least Co2 commute emissions:
Rank | Country | Average commute time (mins) | Estimated CO2 emissions per journey (g) |
1 | Austria | 25.67 | 819 |
2 | Hong Kong | 42.72 | 821 |
3 | Denmark | 28.69 | 827 |

9 | Germany | 31.22 | 1,203 |
10 | Sweden | 29.77 | 1,229 |
Key findings:
- With an estimate of 4,859 grams of CO2 per journey, South Africa finds itself as the country producing the most Co2 emissions per journey, making them and Lebanon (4,621g) the only countries to produce more than 4,500 grams of Co2 per journey
- Though Nigeria is only the 10th largest producer of Co2 emissions from an average journey, they were found to have the longest average commute time, being just over an hour – 61.97 minutes!
- Only 6 countries were found to produce less than 1,000 grams of Co2 emissions from a single journey – Austria, Hong Kong, Denmark, Japan, Finland, and the Czech Republic
