Leading opinion formers in the region have gathered in Abu Dhabi to lay the groundwork for the future energy scenarios that will be presented at the 24th World Energy Congress next year. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host the 24th World Energy Congress which is set to be held in Abu Dhabi from the 9th – 12th of September 2019, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

The main workshop identified three potential scenarios that could play out within the global and regional energy market. Delegates debated each scenario before presenting potential outcomes and developments spanning the period to 2040. The World Energy Council will now use the discussion outcomes to develop more detailed narratives that will be presented to world energy leaders when they gather in Abu Dhabi for the 24th World Energy Congress.

The three-day event also played host to delegates from the World Energy Council Future Energy Leaders programme, a community of exceptional young professionals who share a commitment to shaping the global energy future. The Future Energy Leaders were charged with looking at national and regional energy challenges to identify the main current issues and discuss what the opportunities of tomorrow’s market could be.

Reflecting on the intensive three-day programme H.E. Eng. Fatima Al Foora Al Shamsi, Assistant Undersecretary for Electricity and Future Energy and the CEO of the UAE Organising Committee of the 24th World Energy Congress commented: “We are delighted to have hosted the first workshop of its kind in the region here in Abu Dhabi, and we strongly believe the conversations and narratives developed over the three days will build a strong foundation for more detailed scenarios that will be used and debated by the world’s energy leaders during the 24th World Energy Congress next year. I am particularly pleased to have witnessed the inspirational contribution of our Future Energy Leaders. Their unique views and opinions were a valuable part of the conversations and opened new pathways and ideas to consider.”

Preparations for next year’s 24th World Energy Congress are well underway with Host Sponsors including prominent UAE companies representing the full energy spectrum, namely Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Emirates Nuclear Energy (ENEC) and Mubadala. The Host Sponsors will highlight how they are contributing to the development of the energy sector in the UAE and beyond, and adapting to the ever-changing energy landscape. They will be supported by regional leaders such as the Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation (APICORP), Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA).

In addition, other leading partners include business insight provider IHS Markit and the World Nuclear Association. Working alongside these key players, the UAE will be able to cement its position at the epicentre of the energy debate in 2019.
