Women and girls are worse affected by climate change than men. Perhaps for this reason, they are also often on the frontline of the climate response, whether preserving indigenous knowledge or calling for bolder political action.
A collaboration between CNN’s global gender inequality reporting team, As Equals, and CNN Photos set out to show, from seven countries in the Global South, just how climate change-fuelled extreme weather events are compounding existing gender inequalities. Each assignment captures not just the human stories behind the statistics about loss and damage but also shows women and girls’ resilience and their determination to survive.
The resulting photographs are being exhibited at COP28: in the Water Pavilion in the Blue Zone (the space for accredited delegates), and in the Green Zone where an 8-chapter installation which can be viewed by the public.
To use the exhibition to catalyse conversation with leaders from various spheres, As Equals is hosting an event on 4 December in the Water Pavilion at 18:30 GST. Speakers include Ugandan climate activist, Vanessa Nakate, and Swedish Climate Ambassador Mattias Frumerie.
