Are Cruises No Longer for ‘Old People’?

Cruise holidays rarely cross the mind of the younger generation when deciding on their next adventure. The reason for this is that this form of holiday has an image of being for “old people” and conjures up images of bingo, old fashioned decor and spending days doing nothing other than sitting by the side of the pool. However, this image will soon be a thing of the past as they attempt to attract a livelier and more eco-conscious clientele.

The industry has worked hard and spent a gigantic sum attempting to attract younger holiday-makers onboard. This is still currently underway, but the results have already begun to show as the average age of passengers has dropped as cruise holidays are being advertised to those between the age of 18 and 40.

New Destinations

One of the key ways that the industry has started to shed its image as being a type of holiday for older people is by expanding where they can travel. Specialists like Bolsover Cruise Club have started to add destinations that can offer plenty of action and adventure, such as Galapagos, Iceland and the Arctic. This enables passengers to try their hand at all kinds of amazing activities and see parts of the world that not many others get to see.

In addition to this, many smaller vessels have also been made to navigate narrower waterways – this opens up a host of other more lively destinations that the younger generation will enjoy.

Onboard Changes

Changes have also been made onboard modern cruise liners to attract a new type of customer. Many companies have pumped millions into revamping their ships with all kinds of fantastic technology and luxury leisure and fitness facilities, as well as parties and shows that appeal to younger passengers. Not just this, but the decor and service have also been altered to give the ships a more contemporary feel.

Eco-Friendly

Finally, the industry has worked to appease a more environmentally conscious generation by making their cruise liners more energy-efficient. This has proven to be a challenge, but significant advances have been made by switching to liquified natural gas fuel as the main source of power and going paperless for the booking process.

Due to the industry making gigantic changes, cruises are no longer seen as a type of vacation for “old people”. They are now marketed as much livelier and action packed trips that take passengers to intriguing parts of the world whilst still providing them with plenty of luxury and indulgence onboard.
