Just days after the UAE was confirmed as the host country for the crucial COP28 international climate change conference in 2023,the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, the Arabian Gulf’s leading professional tennis experience, is looking to make further net gains on sustainability.

Aligning with the UAE’s sustainability goals for responsible consumption and production, Championship owners Flash Entertainment have partnered with DGrade, a UAE-based, renowned manufacturer of sustainable clothing products, to make the 13thedition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship an environmentally friendly event onits welcome return, with full capacity, next month.

DGrade will collect single use plastic at the Championship, which runs from 16 – 18 December at the International Tennis Centre, at Zayed Sports City, in Abu Dhabi, including bottles used by spectators and players and facilitate a closed loop by converting them into clothes, including staff t-shirts, demonstrating a clear commitment from Championship stakeholders to contribute to environmental goals.

Recycling plastic bottles to make garments keeps plastic out of landfills, saves energy and water, and lowers carbon emissions as compared to typical polyester yarn manufacture. For example, the staff shirts made using DGrade’s Greenspun® yarn consume 50% less energy, 20% less water, and emit 55% fewer carbon emissions. Furthermore, no oil is used throughout the process.

“We’ve made great strides in building the Mubadala World Tennis Championship legacyin terms of promoting tennis and physical activity, but also in social responsibility and sustainability. The return of our Championship will be a special moment and we all have a collective responsibility to ensure we continue contributing to a better, more sustainable future. Collaboration between all stakeholders is key, and the partnership with DGrade is extremely important to us as, together, we embrace the responsibility to meet the UAE’s goals for responsible consumption and production. Together, we can continue making a difference,” said John Lickrish, CEO Flash Entertainment.

“The UAE has made a significant commitment to sustainability, and it is wonderful to see organisations such as Flash Entertainment, and events like the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, embracing the responsibility to play an active role not only by recycling, but by closing the loop. We are honoured to partner in this initiative and lend our expertise to make a difference for the future,” added Kris Barber, DGrade’s Founder and CEO.

The 13th Mubadala World Tennis Championship will see top-class action on and off court with six of the world’s best male tennis players and two of the best in the women’s game, in a series of elimination matches.
