The demand for sustainable paper products

Did you know that for every ton of paper recycled:

– 17 trees are not cut down
– 7,000 gallons of water are not used
– 380 gallons of oil will not be used
– 3 cubic yards of landfill space will not be filled
– enough energy will be saved to heat your home for 6 months!

Demand for sustainable paper products is on the rise worldwide as consumers increasingly switch to recycled paper or paper produced from sustainable resources in an effort to reduce their overall carbon footprint. The decision to switch to more ecologically friendly paper products is also helped by the lowering cost of recycled paper.

According to recent research, demand for sustainable paper is set to increase steadily over the next five years. Currently the global demand for ‘green’ paper is estimated to be around 16.8 million tonnes. This is set to grow at a CAGR of 6.6 % to reach 24.8 million tonnes by 2016.

Production of recycled paper uses only half the water and 3/4 of the energy than new paper. There is also considerable interest in procuring paper produced from certified managed forests, which reduces the carbon footprint considerably. In addition there is a significant amount of research underway to produce paper from sustainable non-tree sources for use in printing and publishing.
