Graphene – The next big wonder material for generating energy

Image for Graphene – The next big wonder material for generating energy

Graphene is an allotrope of carbon, whose structure is one-atom-thick .

Graphene has "the highest current density (a million times that of copper) at room temperature; the highest intrinsic mobility (100 times more than in silicon); and conducts electricity in the limit of no electrons. Which means it can carry more electricity more efficiency, faster and with more precision than any other material.

Graphene shows off an unusual reaction to light, raising the possibility that it could be useful for night-vision systems, photodetectors and generating electricity from sunlight.

According to the results of some recent reasearch in MIT, shining light on a sheet of graphene that has been treated to establish two regions with different electrical properties creates a temperature difference and a subsequent electrical current.
