Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has announced the installation, and launching of the main 400 kilovolt (kV) power transformer, in addition to a number of other projects, worth a total cost of AED 197 million, at the Hassyan Clean Coal Power Plant. This is part of DEWA’s efforts to increase the capacity and efficiency of electricity and transmission networks, in adherence with its vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility.
"This project supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy, which aims to provide 7% of Dubai’s energy from clean energy sources by 2020. It will increase this target to 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050. DEWA works to achieve the fifth pillar of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which focuses on creating an environmentally-friendly energy mix, with 25% coming from solar energy, 7% from nuclear power, 7% from clean coal, and 61% from gas by 2030, to make Dubai a global centre for clean energy and green economy.

The project also aims to develop the 400 kV electricity transmission networks, by connecting the substation with current electricity networks. DEWA works to build world-class energy infrastructure that meets Dubai’s development demands. The main 400 kV power transformer at Hassyan clean coal power project is part of DEWA’s continuous efforts to achieve its ambitious strategy and plans, in adherence with the highest standards of productivity, reliability and efficiency," said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

"In adherence with DEWA’s strategy and development projects in the energy transmission sector, DEWA continuously develops its electricity services by working to expand its projects, services, and facilities. DEWA’s future objectives aim to increase the efficiency and accountability of its infrastructure, to actively contribute towards the economic growth and prosperity of Dubai," added Al Tayer.

The Hassyan clean coal power plant is based on the IPP model, and will generate 2,400 megawatts (MW). The project has a planned commercial operation date of March 2023. This is also the first project of its kind in the region, and will be developed according to the highest international standards.
