With less than a year to go until the United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosts the 24th World Energy Congress, H.E Dr. Matar Al Neyadi, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Energy and Industry and the Chairman of the Organising Committee has begun a series of engagements with world energy leaders in the run-up to the Congress, which is set to be held in Abu Dhabi from the 9th – 12th of September 2019, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

At the World Energy Week in Milan, numerous energy leaders from around the world including Germany, India, Japan, Nigeria, and Canada discussed their intentions for attending the world’s most influential energy event, which will take place for the first time in an OPEC member country.

H.E Dr. Matar Al Neyadi announced to attendees that the official programme of the Congress is at an advanced stage of development thanks to the early engagement the UAE organising committee has sought to create with key stakeholders. Younghoon David Kim, the Chairman of the World Energy Council, HE Sheikh Nawaf Al Khalifa, Director-General of the Electricity and Water Authority in the Kingdom of Bahrain and Chairman of GCCIA, and H.E Dr. Matar Al Neyadi also launched the registration system for the Congress. Additionally, H.E Dr. Matar Al Neyadi met with H.E Alexander Novak, Russian Minister of Energy, to affirm full cooperation between the UAE and Russian National Committees of the Wolrd Energy Council to support St. Petersburg which will play host to the World Energy Congress in 2022.

The Organizating Committee for the World Congress is committed to the ambition of ensuring the World Energy Congress covers the full spectrum of energy sources as well as actors, including leading banking, investment and financial institutions.

Based on this global engagement, the UAE Organising Committee is now in the process of working with the World Energy Council to finalise the programme which will centre on the theme of Energy for Prosperity. To date, 44 sessions are already confirmed to take place that will address the most critical issues facing the energy sector today and in the future.

Reflecting on his conversations with world energy leaders so far, H.EDr. Matar Al Neyadi, Undersecretary at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Industry and Chairman of the UAE Organising Committee for the 24th World Energy Congress, said: “We look forward to the prospect of the world’s most influential decision makers in the energy industry coming to Abu Dhabi and experiencing a welcoming, safe and modern host, steeped in a rich heritage. We are honoured to have this opportunity in Milan and our upcoming engagements to meet with key opinion formers and work together to build a dialogue that will culminate in September next year. Driven by our combined passion for change within the energy sector, the Organising Committee will continue to meet with world energy leaders and spread the word about the Congress and what Abu Dhabi has to offer.”

Host Sponsors include prominent UAE companies representing the full energy spectrum, namely Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Emirates Nuclear Energy (ENEC) and Mubadala. The Host Sponsors will highlight how they are contributing to the development of the energy sector in the UAE and beyond, and adapting to the ever-changing energy landscape. They will be supported by regional leaders such as the Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation (APICORP), Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA).

In addition, other leading partners include business insight provider IHS Markit and the World Nuclear Association. Working alongside these key players, the UAE will be able to cement its position at the epicentre of the energy debate in 2019.
