The Emirates authority for Standardisation & metrology-ESMA is working on updating the requirements of the energy efficiency label for household appliances for refrigerators and freezers in an effort to reduce the consumption of these appliances to ensure that these products comply with electrical safety standards, energy efficiency. Top Star rating (5 stars) ensures that devices are available for power consumption.

HE Abdullah Al Maeeni, ESMA’s Director General, confirmed that the Authority continuously develops regulations related to energy efficiency in household appliances to upgrade the star system. The higher the stars on energy efficiency cards, reflecting the consumer, the national economy, and the environment, while the consumption of refrigerators and freezers for energy is estimated at 15% of total consumption.

ESMA has issued 362,710 energy efficiency labels for refrigerators and freezers during the period from February last year to the end of February of this year, while HE Al-Maeeni explained that the factors affecting the consumption of energy, whether refrigerator or frozen or any other device, depends to in the size and technology used that have a profound effect on the efficiency of the device.

He added that ESMA has developed technical regulations related to the consumption of electric power devices to ensure that these devices achieve greater efficiency in consumption, raise safety in the UAE society, as well as parallel projects to raise awareness among consumers and traders about the importance of rationalizing consumption.

The Authority regularly conducts awareness workshops on the requirements and procedures for traders, suppliers and manufacturers of electrical appliances to ensure that the products of these companies comply with the program of energy efficiency before the sale of these products in UAE markets.

In mid-2014, the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) issued the UAE’s technical regulations for the energy efficiency of refrigerators and household freezers, in order to raise the efficiency of the devices used in the country and to reduce consumption rates.
