M&S updates stakeholders on progress against its 100 new Plan A commitments launched last year. This year’s update comes as part of a wider business transformation programme.
The 2018 M&S Plan A Report is an annual update against Plan A sustainability targets. The most materially important sections are independently assured by DNV-GL and the report also provides GRI Sustainability Standards, Sustainable Develop Goal and Global Compact reference pages. Greenhouse gas emissions are reported in compliance with the WRI Scope 2 guidance on dual reporting.
The 2018 Modern Slavery Statement is a statutory publication required by the UK Modern Slavery Act.
2017/18 highlights include:
– The achievement of two new Plan A commitments and a further 48 making satisfactory progress.
– Heathier food now accounting for 43% of total food sales.
– £25.7 million donated and raised for charities including £7.4 million to support health causes.
– Over 30,500 hours of paid volunteering were provided to a range of community projects.
– 3,600 people worldwide benefitted from M&S work placements.
– 83% of M&S products sold worldwide now have a social, environmental or ethical benefit designed-in.
– 77% of cotton used now comes from more sustainable sources.
M&S greenhouse gas emissions down 33% on 2006/07 at 430,000 tonnes. 157,000 tonnes (-75%) after deductions for renewable energy and zero after carbon offsetting.
Food waste reduced by 9% compared to 2013/14 and over one million meals were provided to redistribution charities.
63% of M&S Food is now sourced from suppliers meeting a Silver level sustainability standard.
