If pledging against fast fashion is one of your new year’s resolutions, ThreadWerk, a sewing and fabric studio that teaches the craft of home sewing to all ages, is the perfect place to get started.
Courses for all levels of experience
ThreadWerk is a KHDA approved training facility that offers a range of sewing courses and workshops to suit everyone; from children learning to use a sewing machine to adults who have some practice and want to work with delicate materials. ThreadWerk’s courses span all levels of experience from its Intro to Sewing and Beginner Course to its Dressmaking courses.
ThreadWerk’s courses also include Intro to Jersey and Intro to Drapey Fabrics; covering the art of shirt and kimono-style jacket making respectively.
Workshops for kids and teenagers
The Kids Sewing Bee workshop is ideal for kids aged eight and older, where they can make four items across four sessions. Teenage Maker lasts four weeks, helping 13 to 19 year olds learn a new skill. An after-school sewing club is provided for kids and teens who have completed either of these courses.
Meet Maria, Threadwerk’s founder
Hosting courses and workshops in Dubai since 2018, ThreadWerk is owned and run by Maria, who delights in sharing her techniques and patterns and helping others create everything from tote bags to a full head-to-toe outfit.
Maria, Founder of ThreadWerk, shares, “I have always been passionate about sustainability, and from my experience living in Labuan (a small island in Malaysia), I could see that fast fashion works against mindful growth in societies and the environment, as well as often being ill-fitting. My passion for sourcing eco-friendly fibres and making my own clothing led to a blog covering my projects, which then grew into ThreadWerk”.
A glimpse at the courses
All beginner courses include materials, patterns and tracing paper. For all other courses, attendees are asked to bring their own fabric. Patterns will be provided on the day and are available to take home. Sewing machines are provided, although attendees are permitted to bring their own. Course
sizes are kept small to allow plenty of one-on-one time, with a maximum of eight participants for most and even six for more intensive programmes.
Prices for each course start from AED 300 per person (this is the price for the
Intro to Sewing). To see what’s required for each separate course, more details can be found at https://www.threadwerk.com/learn-to-sew
