The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) organised ‘A Day in a Marine Environment’ recently, an event aimed at students, members of different communities and visitors at the Arabian Wildlife Centre. The event was well-received by the attendees.

HE Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, EPAA Chairperson, said, “We were keen to organise ‘A Day in a Marine Environment’ to educate people about the great economic, social and environmental importance of the UAE’s marine and coastal environment. The marine environment is a focus for most of the UAE’s population and for economic and social activities. Rich in biodiversity, it is essential to oil production, desalination, the fishing industry and trade with the outside world.”

The event was held in order to highlight the marine environment in the UAE and its roles in the economy and tourism, raise awareness about the importance of marine animals and plants and about factors related to the preservation of the marine environment, and revitalise marine heritage.

Kalthum Al Mazrouei, the center’s official,  Added: “ The activities included a workshop that involved students sorting beach waste into containers, a virtual reality experience of the underwater world with 360° technology and a painting themed ‘Hand in Hand to Create a Sound Environment’ for the Year of Tolerance. The attendees expressed their appreciation for EPAA’s efforts and initiatives.

Other organisations that participated in the event include the Arabian Wildlife Centre, EPAA’s Scientific Research Department, the Marine Sustainability Department, Sharjah Natural History and Botanical Museum, Sharjah Aquarium, Sharjah Institute for Heritage and Sharjah Department of Sea Ports and Customs.
